COVID-19 Update: 11/11/21

The latest update from the COVID-19 Task Force:

In addition to observing the policies in the COVID-19 Handbook, the COVID-19 Task Force encourages everyone to take on the personal responsibility of educating themselves on the risks surrounding COVID-19. Be mindful of public health guidance as you aim to keep yourself and others healthy throughout the pandemic.

The following resources from the Centers for Disease Control will help you stay up to date on the latest news and public health best practices.

These weekly updates continue to provide instructions for anyone in the campus community who is exposed to COVID-19, experiences symptoms or tests positive. Also, please note the several COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites near campus if you need access to a test or vaccine.

There is currently one active case among the Oglethorpe community, which is isolating off campus. View the latest on the COVID-19 dashboard.

COVID-19 vaccine clinic

Oglethorpe University is providing additional access to anyone seeking a COVID-19 vaccine by hosting a vaccine clinic on Monday, November 15, 2021 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the roundabout outside the TLCC.

This free, walk-up vaccination clinic is offered in partnership with the DeKalb County Board of Health. Participants are asked to bring identification, an insurance card, and their CDC vaccine card if applicable, though these items are not required. No appointment is needed, and the clinics are open to anyone.

A parent or guardian must accompany anyone ages 12-17. Boosters will be available by request for those who qualify. For more information or questions please email healthinfo@oglethorpe.edu or dekalb.covid19@dph.ga.gov.

J-Term and Spring 2022

Registration for J-Term and the 2022 spring semester is open. At this time, it is expected that the policies outlined in the COVID-19 Handbook for fall 2021 will carry over to J-Term. The COVID-19 Task Force will continue to monitor local COVID-19 activity to inform planning for the spring 2022 semester.

Boar’s Head Concert and Celebration

Plans for the annual Boar’s Head celebration are underway. The event will return to its in-person format on campus on Friday, December 3, 2021, with COVID-19 precautions in place. Please stay tuned for further event details as they become available.

Flu vaccine

The COVID-19 Task Force encourages everyone to get the flu vaccine. Maintaining routine vaccinations, such as the flu vaccine, can help prevent illnesses, reduce stress on the healthcare system, and protect at-risk populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Retail pharmacies such as Publix, Costco, CVS, Walgreens, Target, Kroger and Walmart offer flu shots at no cost with most insurance types.

The Office of Student Wellness has received additional flu vaccine vouchers from Costco for students. Please fill out this form to request one of these vouchers.

COVID-19 testing fall 2021

Those who are unvaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated must participate in COVID-19 testing when requested to do so throughout the fall. Students, faculty and staff continue to be notified via email when they are selected for COVID-19 testing and must submit a valid test via the link included in the email as instructed. Students and employees are responsible for obtaining their own COVID-19 test. Both PCR and antigen tests are accepted.

Any individual who is not currently vaccinated, but later becomes fully vaccinated will then be exempt from these testing protocols. If you have become fully vaccinated and would like to update your status, please do so using the appropriate form below.

Isolation and quarantine

Are you experiencing COVID-19 symptoms?

If you begin to experience symptoms of COVID-19, please inform your instructors or supervisor, and stay home as you monitor your symptoms.

If you do test positive for COVID-19, please follow the reporting instructions below:

  • Students who test positive for COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status, must report their case to healthinfo@oglethorpe.edu.
  • Faculty and staff who test positive for COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status, must report their case to HR Director Sandy Butler.

Any individual testing positive for COVID-19 will need to isolate, regardless of vaccination status. On-campus residents may choose to return home to isolate or isolate on campus. Residents who relocate to a temporary housing assignment on campus will have access to support services (dining, educational, etc.). Please contact your Resident Advisor (RA) or Campus Life staff for more details.

COVID-19 violations and concerns

Please remember that face-coverings continue to be required indoors on campus, unless you are alone in your office or room, or while actively eating or drinking. Individuals should report COVID-19 violations, incidents or concerns through this form. For students, reports are addressed through the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities and may result in removal from campus. Reports pertaining to faculty and staff are addressed through the appropriate human resource guidelines and may result in disciplinary action.

COVID-19 testing sites

COVID-19 testing is available through many sources, including private physician offices and pharmacies (where there may be a charge) and county departments of public health (where they are generally free).

The COVID-19 vaccine continues to be widely available for those not yet vaccinated. Many sites are now offering the COVID-19 vaccine for ages 5 and older. While booster shots are not required, the CDC recommends them for some individuals. View more information on booster shots from the CDC.
